gear oil weight.

seriously, its a gearset. as long as it says "gear oil" on the bottle, the weight doesnt matter that much. gear oil weight isnt nearly as crucial as engine oil weight.

Use 1 qt of Lukas Oil, then top it off with regular 75w90.

what is leaky on it? if you take the diff cover off, make sure to clean it real whell with a wire brush/wheel, then brake clean, and then use a nice bead of black silicone on it.

And you'll never remove it again....

You can use a TINY bit of black silicone, but a $5 gasket really is a whole lot better. You can get it at the dealer or a rear end shop, if your auto parts store doesn't cooperate.

Use the lightest GL-5 gear oil you can get your hands on.

never remove it again? it's silicone, not JB weld.

Seriously, i've done about 30-40 rearends, used silicone every time. AND removed it later on. It's the best way to seal it. Those gaskets suck, usually end up leaking.

I've put gaskets on both. They exist. I even found a nice reusable one for the 8.8 (but it is rather pricey).

Black RTV is a LOT worse on 8.8s, where you'll crack the plastic cover trying to get that SOB off. The 7.5s will bend up, but you can flatten them. Yes, that's experience.

As for using it at the dealer, they do go on that way, and they don't leak. But YOU don't have to take it off next time.

If you MUST use RTV, use it (very) sparingly. A big fat bead might not BE JB Weld, but it's awfully close....

There are also less-hard silicones out there that might be a bit more appropriate than the black stuff.

Gaskets are easy to find for the 7.5 and 8.8. All the major auto parts stores carry them for around $10.

I bet your dealership charged for one Wicked and made you use RTV.
