hey everyone! i bought my ranger in september of last year and since then have noticed a quirk with the transmission. i have in fact changed the transmission fluid fyi but sometimes at a stop it will refuse to enter 1st gear unless i shift to another gear then back into first, sometimes taking a few try’s to actually go into gear. i can’t imagine this is anything significant, as of right now the truck has 121,640 miles. i’m thinking it may just be low on transmission fluid but it doesn’t hurt to ask people more knowledgeable. the truck is a 2.3, m5odr1 5 speed, 2wd. thank you.

You probably have a tiny bit of air in the clutch hydraulic system which is preventing the clutch from fully releasing when you push the pedal in. This is a very common issue to have especially right after replacing the clutch as you have to disconnect the slave cylinder and bleed it once you hook it up again - or when replacing any part of the hydraulics.

Its a common trait of the transmission. You can read the same thing all over all the forums.

My 04 does it also. Just shift it to second and back. I have 217000 on mine

I had similar problem with my automatic, before I knew that a vacuum line was kinked, I had to manually shift through the gears and couldn’t use overdrive. I’m not sure with manual transmissions, I’ve looked online and it said clutch, synchromesh mechanism, worn bearings, clutch cable adjustment, low fluid level in the hydraulic clutch mechanism, a bad clutch master or slave cylinder. Other than that, I’m not every sure.

Toonces drives a Ranger . . . . just not very well.

Looks like they missed "proximity to alien spacecraft" and "living an unhealthy life-style".

On my '97 I have to shift into 3rd before first at stop lights a lot of times, once moving it isn't an issue it's just gear teeth bashing together since there's no speed differential to get the synchro's lining the teeth up...
