Ok folks iv owned my ranger since it was brand new. Its a 2000 x-trend cab 3.0 stepside 4x4 with 105k on it with stock rims and tires Ever since Iv owned it has only gotten 11 mpg at best maybe 12 --- 200-225miles to a full tank (20 Gallons) It dont matter how you driver highway or country roads. Its been to the dealership many times and they tell me nothing is wrong with it. With gas prices hitting new highs I kinda wanna fix it. Any ideas whats wrong with it. Id hate to get an import. HELP!!! PLEASE

Also note its had 3 full services (plugs, wires, filter ect ect)

What year, Any check engine lights? Do you always use the same gas station? Has it been extremely cold lately?

Mistake #1 is assuming that a 20 gallon tank with a needle on "E" means that you used 20 gallons. It may be a LOT less.

Valve clatter?

Fuel grade doesn't affect valves. Perhaps you mean detonation?

If it really is valve clatter, bad valves can make the mileage quite bad.

My Fiancee's Ranger is the same way. The mileage is HORRIBLE. I got way better mileage with my 4.0L SOHC when I owned it. Her's is a Reg Cab Auto 4x4 with the Flex Fuel.

I don't even keep track of it anymore. It had 120 miles on the tank last time I filled it up. Needle was on 1/4 tank.

My F-250 gets horrible mileage too.

I think it's a ford thing!

I don't think I've ever had that bad of mileage on mine. I tend to get 17-25 MPG with mine, depepnding on conditions.

Have you tried disconnecting the battery for 15-20 minutes to let the ECM reset itself?

I don't understand how a 3.0 can get such bad gas mileage?

If it ran great and did'nt have large tires/wheels on it and it still got that kind of mileage I would probably get rid of it.

bad gas mileage

Iv pulled codes a dozen times nothing wrong, disconnected the battery as well and nothing. I know Ford had a recall on the transmission programing and it went back for that and nothing. Im at a loss for it. I just dont get it!

Also on the fueling up thing when i fuel up its around 17-19 gallons in the tank. Yeah i tend to run it low as possible lol.

start with the basics.

How much weight do you have in the truck
Do you have a ladder rack/luggage rack
Do you do a lot of stop & go driving
Tire pressure
Driving you truck like a rental
It should get around 18 mpg so getting 11 seem a little low
Anyone can chime in on engine diagnosis
02 sensor
themostat. wrong temp range installed??
Good luck

Is your 4x4 locked in maybe? and is it a manual or auto? and do you have air conditioning? I would also check things like the MAF sensor and O2 sensors.
