first off let me start by saying this was jsut a spur of a moment type thing that went too far. ok today i PM'd a guy on another forum about a set of brand new 8-16 R-1 tractor tires (31" tall: 8" wide, 16" wheel) and lowballed his price that he ended up taking so i was obliged to go get them. im thinking about throwing them on my 94 ranger 4x4 to go play in the mud a bit. now im not looking to go jumping or anything crazy, just go thruy a pit in 4lo 2nd gear and just let er churn.:D

my question is will the front axle be able to handle them? what do yall think is the weak link in the truck? or is it crazy to put them on? this is not neccesarily my DD but it is my DD/gas saver, as ive got a 08 dodge megacab cummins also

specs;
1994 ranger 4x4 4.0 v6 all stock, 5spd manual, dana 35 front MM manual hubs 3.73 gears open diff, 8.8 explorer rear swap 3.73 gears stock limited slip.

My credo
I didn't ask for your life story, just answer the question!
31x8x16. You shouldnt have any problems, but you CAN break it if you try hard enough. 35s are about the limit, some people get away with 37s even.

You'll break the milemarker hubs before anything else.

if the MM hubs are the weak link then im happy. thats the cheapest repair with just a 70 dollar set of used WARNs.

im hoping to find some used 16" wheels for cheap to run them on(or switch the tires im running now to, if theyre nicer). will mustang wheels fit on tese trucks or is the backspace/offset wrong? ive got 16" new style ranger whels on it now with 31" street ATs.

the truck:D

well, i went and picked the tires up yesterday after work. they are just as tall as th tire i have now with the weight of the truck on them, but they are a little narrower.

im having a hell of a time finding 16" wheels for them tho for under 200 bux. :annoyed:

You try looking for Explorer 16s? They seem to be all over the place around me, both in steel and aluminum. Anything except the ones from IRS models should fit.

Also, I'd suggest getting Warn's Jeep hubs for it (pt# 37780). They're visually indistinguishable from the locking hubs Warn specifies for Rangers (#29071), but are made of a much stronger heavier alloy.

Nice truck BTW. I've always had a thing for Reg Cab shortbed 4x4s. :D

$9.99 per pair at both of the closest JY's. That includes all the adapting stuff too.

So far I have 2.5 sets, given that I haven't broken a think on my D28 in 11 years I think I should be set for awhile. :D

thanx for the compliments on the truck. i hate to know what ive got, $$$ wise, invested in this truck but i love it.

:icon_rofl:i can post up some pics of the tires on the truck when i get them mounted and installed. maybe tomorrow i can take some pics with one rolled up next to the tires that i already have on it.

im supposed to be meeting a guy tomorrow with a setof wheels off a sport trac with center caps, 16s. they appear to be in better shape than the ones i have now so ill probably swap these AT tires on the nicer sprot trac wheels and put the v-treads on these wheels.

Cute little tractor tires. :icon_thumby:

Be forewarned they don't have a lot of sideways stability, they don't fight against sliding sideways that well. They also like to plug up if you need to go backwards under adverse conditions.

You will also note that even as tractor type tires go, longbar/shortbar tires ride rather rough. Dad has a set of Goodyears on his Case and they set the thing into terrible occilations at lower speeds.

I run military tires on trailworthyfab wheels on a d35 ttb. Its not ideal by a long shot and I'm checking my bearings bimonthly just in case. Your 31's will be fine. I'm curious to know how your truck does in the mud, get her dirty and post pics!
