What size tank do you guys recommend for MIG welding? I finally got a MIG on the way, I've been using a flux-core welder for the past couple years. My welding consists of just little projects, such as bumpers, welding on mufflers, etc. etc. I'm going to be buying my tank outright so I was wondering what you all thought.

Essentially, I want to know how many bumpers I could make with a 40CF tank. Or would you recommend just going with a bigger 80CF tank? Thanks everyone

Yeah this is true. I ended up getting a 90CF tank. Big enough for how much I use it.

Here's another question for you guys...my tank regulator has two gauges, one reads how much gas is left in the tank and the other measures how much is being dispensed, in Liters/minute (it can be adjusted). How many liters/min is the bare minimum needed to have enough shielding gas to ensure quality welds? That way I can conserve as much gas as possible. Thanks!

hmmm liters a min mins in cfm.... and really the poor man i am i go with the minimum i can get away with with out it popping and spitting an buy the way my gauges are broken lol

You can usually get away with 12-15 if you are working in a space with no wind.

Just grabbed a Northern Industries 125 flux cored wire feed. $130 bucks on sale!! THANK YOU BLACK FRIDAY! Anyways it should be able to do 3/16 on a couple passes and be great for sheetmetal or exhaust.

Remember when choosing a welder that you only need to lay a 1/4" weld. this will be fine up to 3/8" plate, above that you just lay a multi pass which consists of still 1/4" welds - easy.
This bit of advice is aimed at the D.I.Y'ers - The golden rule to buying a welder is buy the biggest you can afford (biggest in amps).
The bigger the welder, you will find, can weld for longer without needing a cooling period.
I find the best place to look if you cannot afford an industrial machine (usually 200+ amp) is pawn shops, sometimes you can find a good used machine for what the best one is form Harbor Freight tools etc.

My christmas present to myself...picked it up about 2 1/2 weeks ago....Millermatic 211 with an 80 cu/ft cylinder of 75/25. It came with .030 wire, but I've got a roll of .035 in there for the 1/4 plate I've been playing with lately...

Snap-on FM140A, beat the heck out of my former Lincoln, I bought it used and non working for 200.00. installed a new 15' torch lead and repaired a bad ground and its been the best welder Ive ever used, even though it s 120V welder 100%, 140 amp continuous duty use

What are the components of "Steelmix 3"? Just curious. I've been in the "gas" business for a while and every distributor names their mixes differently. What kind(s) of
material(s) are you welding?
