My 84 has a small tank (2WD 2.3LShortbox)
the sending unit is toast, and they don't make replacements.
So I was wondering if anyone has put a larger of different style tank in their early Ranger.

I used a tank out of an 87 for mine (short wheelbase), it has the low pressure, in tank fuel pump. The straps are a little tight, but it fit without too much fighting it. A couple of wires (spliced into the new sending unit plug, make sure you get that too) and the gauge reads correct as well.

Since you are staying carbed, use a keg. That would go with the rat rod theme

I thought about it... I need more gas storage for the trips... and the keg might get in the way of the winch (if mounted up front) and in the bed is storage for Work!!!
I thought about putting a keg in the cab a few times but nothing full of gas...

Maybe I need a rear tank out of a Bronco!

I've thought about putting an extra capacity rear 70's f-150 gas tank under the ranger but its only 38 gallons, it might not be enough...:icon_twisted:

although it might sit a bit to low

As far as the extra capacity, I don't think so. I was having problems with the 84 sending unit, and as you said, They don't make them anymore. I was more concerned with knowing how much fuel I had.

I might have one available. I'm replacing mine because of a hole in it. But picking up a couple parts B2's tonight.

Jerry sounds like a plan... 23 gallons with the V8 would be perfect, a working sending unit would be priceless...
