I've got a Mazda 5-spd in a '90 Ranger laying all over my workbench. I started out chasing a "rattly" noise it had while above 5-10mph. I got it fully disassembled but don't really see anything wrong. I'm planning on replacing bearings and put it back together....I guess.
There are taper bearings on input and output shafts, and a needle bearing between the shafts. Is the spacer on the input shaft bearing a selectable shim also or how do you know how much "play" there should be for the needle bearing. This directly affects how "loose" the input shaft is. How much "play" should the input shaft have?
