Before I jumped into my engine build I had no solid idea what it was going to cost. I had a ballpark, but a big ball park. I am going to post all of my expenses for others to see and get an idea.
I started with a 89 small block Windsor that was running fine. Opened it up and decided to play it safe and do a rebuild.
Stock heads vatted, checked for cracks/warping and full valve job: $315
Block bored and honed .30 over, vatted, and new freeze plugs: $200
Polish crank shaft: $40
Remove old cam bearings and install new: $20
Also my machine shop is recovering my rods ($80) and doing a dynamic balance ($120)
These are all the prices I paid at my local shop that comes highly recommended. I called a few other places that were cheaper, but reputation and customer service I will pay more for.
In transit are Keith black pistons 11:1, plasmamoly rings, bearings, comp cams extreme 4x4 cam and some 1.7 roller rockers. I am going to have quite a bit of money sunk into this when I'm done, but going this route over a crate engine, I am able to pick my parts, pay smaller chunks at a time, and personally know everything is together the way I want.
