Guns I would buy by brand: Ruger, Marlin, Remington, Savage, Howa, Remington, and Thompson Center.
Models I would buy for a good starter gun by each of these. Ruger all american, marlinX7(theres actually a few different ones), Remington 700 or the new 783!, Savage (110,111,116,10,stevens 200),Howa 1500, Thompson Center venture or dimension.
I would probubly not buy a 30-06 over a .270win. A .270 is pretty much a 30-06 necked down to a .277 bullet. Has a flatter bullet for a little loss in energy.
If I was gonna look at short chambers, I'd look at .243, 7mm-08, .308. Long chambers i'd go with 25-06, .270win, .280rem, 7mm rem mag, 300win mag.
For reloading purposes, you can reload three guns really with one case design. 25-06,.270,30-06. This makes them all a good choice as brass is more likely to be found. .308 is probubly the most widely used bullet case, and I believe the .243 and 7mm-08 shares the same brass as .308 so both should be good. 7mm rem mag is probubly my favorite as its a flat bullet with a great bullet selection. 300win mag is probubly the .30cal I would chose as its faster than a .308 and has resonable ammo.
I realize you allready got your gun, but if in the future you do another purchase, use some of this to help with a decision. For stock sake, get a boyds thumbhole. you'll have to get on a backorder, but its the best deal out there for the best stock design.
