New Member, Need Advice On 2000 Ranger

Hey everybody, currently waiting for loan to get approved on a 2000 Ranger XLT 4x4, black, 3.0 liter. Anyways i got a couple questions, concerns, etc i need some help with. First off is the abs light is on, i did reseach and it seems like it might be a sensor? 2nd is from a stop going into 1st gear, it kinda kicks, but shift smootly through all gears? I think it might have to do with the sensor? and 3rd how much new front rotors, i think these are warped because coming to a stop from about 50mph it shakes? Also where can i get a center armrest lid? this one the latch is broken??

ABS light COULD be a sensor, though you need a shop to read the codes; not the same as OBD-II. The ABS sensor on the top of the rear axle is cheap and easy to replace (~$20, one 10 mm bolt).
The front ABS sensors are more expensive, but COULD be related to your shuddering stops, since the front ABS sensors use the rotors for the pulse signal. Rotors aren't very expensive, maybe $40 each - shop around. Just MAKE SURE you get ABS rotors and new pads. Front brakes on this model couldn't BE any easier, but you may need a breaker bar to get the caliper bolts off. Use loc-tite and 85 ft lbs when you re-install.

The "kinda kicks" is your slipyoke. No biggee. Mine has done that since new and I refuse to re-grease it. It is part of (front part) the rear drive shaft, it has a rubber boot covering it. Re-greasing it only lasts for a while. The FIX is the one-piece driveshaft.


How much $$ and how many miles? If you are buying from a dealer, I'd make that "ABS light on" a deal-breaker. It won't pass inspection! Dicker them down, or make them fix it.

sweet, um its a 2000 xlt, black with 112,000 miles(alot, but nice truck) i did a blue book check and it came up to 9500, but im paying 6500-$1000trade in. Also im taking it to the dealer today to have it all checked out etc, i havent signed a contract yet, so i told them i want it all fixed etc before i sign papers. i love the truck, i plan on a 3 inch body lift and 33's

sorry to jump threads here but is the 'kick' pretty common..my truck has done this since i got it and im no mechanic by any means..i was just wondering what needs greased cause it drives me nuts

I have the same truck. I bought mine with 104,000 miles on it for 7500. I got ripped off, but we were in the middle of a blizzard and all the 4x4s went up in price. The overdrive on/off light wouldn't stop blinking.

I busted the clip on my center console and just have a bungee chord running around it the long way. It keeps it shut and it'll hold down sunglasses or cellphones etc. There's a 3 dollar solution.

A guy on R-F actually cut his piece out to make 40/40 seats instead of 60/40

My truck kicks too, once when starting and once again at a slightly higher speed.
Like said above, greasing the slip yoke does help but it's not long term.

good, im just glad to hear thats its not a bad tranny or something. i think for the middle console im going to rig some velcro to hold it down or something. When i go to sign the loan contract tomorrow, they are going to service it and fix the abs light etc. i just want it so i can start on the audio and a body lift and bigger tires?

The slip yoke splines need to be greased. It sticks after some miles. There is a Ford TB for the problem, so it is well known. Make sure you index (mark) the flange mounts on the differential before you take it off the truck and before you take the splines apart. Then grease it (I used bearing grease), put it back together (match the marks), and put it back on the truck. Easy fix.

'99 and up should have a chip key, If you only have one key your gonna have to take the truck to a dealer and them make a new one and its kinda expensive. If you really wanted to you could get an SCT progrmer for the truck and turn the PATS (the chip key set up) off and get some extra power out of the truck.
