Newer auto trasmissions

So I'm well aware that the older Ranger transmissions are little more than a tooth pick with three rubber bands, but I know they've switched to something else in the more recent years. I'm looking to buy a new to me (06-10) truck and I'm having a hell of a time finding anything with a 5 speed.

So, I'm putting it to the experts. What do you guys think of the newer auto trans, do they suffer from the same reliability problems as the older versions or have they fixed the new ones up enough for it to not be an issue for me?

The 5r55e are great units. 99% of their issues can be fixed with a new valve body gasket and EPC solenoid which are easy to do and cost roughly $200. Change the fluid every 40k miles and it'll last a long time.

Forgot to mention, I'm looking at another 4 banger and it most likely will never see towing.

They are pretty good. The absolute worst part about them is that there isn't an actual dipstick.

If that's there only shortcoming I'd say we're getting off easy.

Is it just like a differential where you pull the plug and make sure the fluid comes to the level of the plug?

Uhh, no they do have actual dipsticks.

Yeah, that should be 02+ Explorers/Mountaineers have no dipstick. The Rangers all have dipsticks.

Also the explorers got the 5R55S not the 5R55E

^^^ except for the explorer sports. I have an 03 with the 5r55e and dipstick. I think the 01-03 sports all got the 5r55e since they were based on the older sports

No sir. Only the 5R55S, which was never in a ranger.

You know, now that I think about it the only two Rangers that come in to our shop regularly that are newer than 04 both have manual transmissions. I can't say I've ever gotten a good look at an auto 04+ Ranger.

The only way i got a new 5 speed 4 banger was to have my local dealer source it out and have it delivered. There was a V6 on the lot, but it wasn't 4wd and they wanted $25k. That much is rediculous for a Compact w/o 4wd.

They're out there, you just have to go to the dealer and State EXACTLY what you want, they will find it for you because they want your business. Don't budge. I didn't, and he ended up finding me 3 in my area after he said he was SURE they're wouldnt be any
