well,it's finally happened.the 2.9l ranger engine i've had running my air compressor for the last 5 years(and the one that was thoroughly beaten on before driving my butt up to these islands)has finally done it.

it's started puking coolant out the overflow,even when cold...and i've got enough experience with these motors to know what that means.

well,i'm not wasting time or money on a worn out 2.9,so i looked around the yard to see what was lying around to replace it with.

here's one option.from a 97 3 series,but while it's got some cool factor,it's a little big.runs nice,though.

option two.
it's a toyota(ewwwwww)2.0 turbo diesel.runs like new.practically is new,with barely 100k km on it.while it lacks the cool logo on top,i think this is the better choise to supply my compressed air needs for the forseeable future.

should be fairly economical to run,too.

i dont think reliability is an issue with either of thoses choices, but im not a bmw expert. the diesel might be cheaper to fix if something breaks though, might be something to think about

that's how i'm looking at it.

the 2.9 was in the B2 that became the wheelie machine.i wheeled the you know what out of it before i drove it up to here,then wheeled it some more before ripping it out and using it to run the compressor.been pretty reliable till now.

reliabillity is a major factor.i don't like being without air,it really messes with the payday.

both would be expensive to repair,so i just wouldn't repair them.i'd scrap it and run whatever free option i had available.

the diesel will be cheaper to run,and better sized for the job.thing is,i've never been much of a toyota fan,but still,i'm not stupid.i know where my pay is coming from.the bimmer's pretty,but pretty don't bring home the bacon.

looks like the toyota motor is in one them vans were the driver sits ontop the motor... yea, do the motor a favor and get it out of there. if you want something reliable, get a ford 300 I6 or and old dodge \6

ya,it's one of them vans.it's the japanese rhd version...the windshield got busted and i can't get another one this side of the pond,so it looks like it's parts now.

How big is your propane converted to air tank? With any automotive engine you could run 6 or 8 (i think real estate would be the limiting factor, not power) and fill that tank up in just a couple minutes
