I have been thinking about getting a ready-to-run SCX10 Honcho, somehow my wonderings on youtube brought to them doing some pretty neat things and they look like a lot of fun.

A week ago we had a really bad storm go through I was helping the parents get their sump pump working and I found a relic of my childhood in the basement, a great big twin engine monster truck. I don't think it is anything very cheaply made but was old when we got it 15+ years ago. Somebody all but gave it to us because it just goes nuts when you put power to it (it was all I could do as a 2nd grader to catch it)

What the heck is it for a thing? We have another clear body for it too, I am not really an import truck fan but I haven't been able to find another Nissan body on the net... I might see if I could get it to fit my SCX10 if/when I ever get one because domestic truck offerings are slim and it is something different. If I knew what it was I might be able to find the part to make it more than a beat up display piece. Aside from on the motors I don't see any markings on the chassis.

Where is a good place to get parts?

I found Tower Hobbies but they don't list dit squat for Kyosho.

Good places to buy whole trucks would be great too, Tower has the SCX10 that I want to get but I would like to compare prices against other places too.

Anything like our tech library for either the Double Dare or the SCX10 would be nice too. I read/hear/watch people saying its waterproofed, with extra lights, custom interior with these shocks... and I am sitting here wondering how people know how to do this. Figuring out waterproofing on your own could get pricy...

I have ran RC car's a little, I basically know you can only plug the big battery in one way and to avoid water and grass (water makes it freak out, grass wraps around axles) I want to get started but I don't know where to get started.

To waterproof it:
Put the receiver in a balloon, silicone and zip tie it closed.
Dont worry about the motors, they will run under water.
I'm not sure about the mechanical speed control.
Good servos are sealed already.

OR

You can ship it to me, so I can add it to my collection of vintage RCs. :D

If I did get this thing going I would leave it as stock as possible for being as old as it is. It would be nice if it did more than twitch at random before it streaked across the room with no warning. Just anything about working on the darn thing would be nice because right now it is all greek to me.

I was thinking more about my potential SCX10 for the mods...

That doesn't appear to need any kyosho specific parts. Buy a radio, it comes with a reciever and some servos. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTI0001P?&I=LE6974**&P=1

Then buy a speed controller, the brushed stuff is harder to come buy these days, but tower has plenty. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXLHE2&P=0

Tower's prices are in line with the rest of them, and they have been good to me for the past 15 years, so I keep ordering from them. I'd suggest getting a new r/c, though, and then fixing that old one up at a later date, and keep it as something that's cool. I wouldn't run it hard, parts are hard to find for those.

Just pop it apart and see how the radio and servos are wired, and what everything looks like. R/C is pretty simple, your servos are probably crusty from sitting, and the radio may or may not be still good. If it takes right off, try adjusting the throttle trim on the radio - should be a slider somewhere.

That is the plan, I do want to get a ready to run one... maybe if I don't like the stock radio I could switch it over to the other one.

I just don't want to be the idiot that runs out thinking I can bolt a 302 to a 2.3 trans, I don't know what all works together and what doesn't.

If it takes right off, try adjusting the throttle trim on the radio - should be a slider somewhere.
Neither the steering (twitches at random on its own) or the overzelous throttle care about the remote at all. It just has a mind of its own when you put battery power to it. It does the same thing with the remote turned off with no batteries in it.

First... get rid of that mechanical speed control and get a ESC.

Get a good radio- Futaba, Hitec

Replace the old battery packs, they probably wont hold a good charge.

The motors could be fine, it all depends on how the were used and taken care of, but they work for now.

You dont need to go nuts and replace everything with top of the line, big $$$ stuff. Just buy good stuff

Old. :icon_twisted:

IRC they were NiCad, 7.2V sounds familiar. It has been awhile since I have done anything with either it or the Radio Shack buggy I originally got the batteries for. They did work 5 years ago the last time I had the buggy out but the duration wasn't near what it once was. Going in circles on my apartment patio was kind of boring so I didn't mess with it a whole lot.

You would think they could make batteries that last longer than 20 years. :annoyed:
