Rear Axle

i have a 2wd, 4.10 gear, 7.5, rear axle. i want to make it posi-traction, instead of taking chance and looking to buy one i would just rather buy new parts to put int he axle, I am going to get 4.56 gears but my question is if i put the Power-trax Lock-Right, from the parts section, that i want to buy in my axle will it make my axle posi-traction? meaning it would rotate both tires and not just one?

do they even make 4.56 for the 7.5? Just swap in an 8.8 all around just strong but its up to you.

yes they make 4.56's for the 7.5 and yes a lockright will make both tires spin. A lockright will be a little rough on the road. but it will be easier than swapping out the carrier.

I have a 7.5 l/s 4:11s works good and going nowhere.If I wanted to change the gear ratio and put a locker into it I would look into an 8.8 I hate putting money into inferior parts.If you have a line on a used lock right and want to put that in that's cool but I wouldn't put a bunch of money and time into a 7.5.

I would pick up a 8.8 and rebuild that. Then swap it into your truck. Less down time, stronger axle, easier to work on(out of the truck).

I assume the 8.8 will be a straight swap no cutting or anything? I don't plan to be doing a lot with my truck, daily driver, I will go mudding but nothing crazy and maybe some towing. So would a 7.5 with a locker and 4.10 gears be more then enough and fine?

Posi-traction is a GM term for their limited slip.

If you put a lock-rite in your axle it will be "locked" meaning yes it will turn both axles without differentiation under throttle. no throttle, and it will differentiate for turning (typically associated with ratcheting clicks if using a lock-rite).

currently I am running 31x10.51 tires, I can't do to much like welding and ect.. so I am just looking for straight swaps. And for the lockers and gears I will pay someone to put them in.

Cant you just swap an Explorer 8.8? Thats what I'm workin on researching, plus you end up with rear disks. I have alot more reading to do, but so far it looks pretty straight forward.

Yes, but I believe if you swap to disc brakes you have to change out your braking lines/hoses and ect...

The Explorer axle requires welding, though the stock master & hydro lines work fine with the discs (at least on my '90 BII it does). I did have to modify the parking brake cable assy. though.

I suggest getting a Ranger 8.8" ('90-'92 Rangers for the same width as yours). It's a direct bolt-in and is more than plenty strong for 31" tires. Gear it to 4.56, and put whatever locker of your choosing in it (4.10 is a hair tall, especially if you plan to tow).

I have been looking around my area but very few places have rangers and if they do they have been scarped to hell, any places you guys can recommend to find a 8.8?
