I feel embarrassed to be posting so many threads, iv just had a ton of problem's latley and hope I'm not annoying anyone! lol My rear pinion seal is bad its leaking quite a bit of fluid. I was going to pay someone to do it but after researching it it looks like something I can do on my own. Im pretty good but iv never messed with rear-ends before. What do you think?:icon_twisted:

It is super easy to do, super hard to mess up. The worst part about them is finding something the right size to pound the new seal in with.

Someone did an excellent write up on how to do it. You may want to have a sleeve kit handy as well in case you find the pinion flange (think that's what it's called) has a groove worn in it.

EDIT: Here you go. It was BRUTUS_T_HOG.

1. Shane, you're to nice... lol
2. Man Brutus is complete and does things right.. I don't think I've ever used a puller on pinion yokes :dunno:

Iv watched some videos of people doing it and none of them have used a seal puller or a Large 2 jaw puller or steering wheel puller w/ long bolts. I also dont have these 2 tools, are they really needed?

No. I usually use a hammer to get the pinion flange off and a chisel to remove the seal.

I used a crowbar on my '89 Ranger.....I pried behind the flange and across from the bar I tapped on the back side of the flange lightly with a hammer to work it off the splined shaft.....it was slow but it worked....

I also had to coat the inside of the flange splines with silicone gasket sealer when I re-installed it to keep oil from leaking out from between the splines---(maybe that's just a problem with '89 Rangers though)
