In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
Maybe if you would talk to it, you know, warn the knob that you are about to go over a bump. Then it might not get so scared.

Is there a lot of play in your shifter? Maybe it could use some new bushings. There is a repair kit for that. I ordered one but haven't installed it yet.

It's been my personal experience that a man should never talk to his knob...

Next question. Is the mount for the automatic the same as for manual? I wouldn't think so but the little girl at Advance could only find one for my vehicle. Thanks again.

Look up the part numbers on Rock Auto. That should tell you if they're the same.

The girls at advance & the zone always seem more able when looking up parts, but I may be a bit skewed in my observations...?

it is just wrong anymore to expect a counter person to interpret applications that are not listed or provided on a particular part

you would have to have been there when I was trying to explain to the garage mechanic and owner that the shackles on my rear springs were upside down and they needed to be on the bottom of the spring mounts. they didn't believe me, and had to go look at another ranger they had in their yard.

I like how people expect the guys/gals running the counter at an auto parts store to know anything about cars. Its a crappy low paying job in retail... you're lucky if you get someone with two functional arms who doesn't try to lick you. If they had any knowledge about cars, they would be fixing cars not running a cash register. And this is coming from a person who worked at an advance auto for 3 years. Running a cash register is a stepping stone, not skilled labor... smile politely and don't ask to many questions.

Then why do so many act like it?

Why do i have to argue with the counterperson that yes, the 460 was available in 97?. And no, it did not have factory platnium plugs.

Why do i get asked what engine i have when i need a wiper?

2 or 4 wheel drive when i ask for a U joint for a front drive shaft?

Sorry not to hijack.

Because the only thing they know is what the screen says.

Exactly... dont argue... they have a computer and thats what they know. If you know better, which I know you do then you walk in with part numbers in hand and say go get this off the shelf. I was working part time as mechanic when I worked at advance out of highschool. We had the computers but anything old or questionable we pulled out the catalogs. No one has books anymore so you got a grocery bagger with an auto parts computer.... it's your own fault if you walk in there expecting advice or miracles.

If you go to the supermarket and buy a can of tomatoes and some cheese do you expect the person at the register to give you a receipe for a pefect lasagna? They are the same people...

And I'm not making fun of them... i was them... im saying give them a break. They know nothing and get bonuses for upselling. We use to get money for every brake "kit" we sold so a person coming in needing just pads. We made dirt money and tried to upsell them on full brake kits with rotors and calipers.

Hey, I spent 3 years running a register at Advance AFTER I made Senior Master Tech, just reapplied to my old store for the CPP position (and was told at the end of the interview the CPP decided not to leave so they offered me the RPP which I do not want) and I still tried to lick people.

I could imagine that in that job, you have to "help" so many clueless idiots each day, that you are too numb to recognize the one or two intelligent/knowledgeable customers who walk in and actually know what they need.
