I recently bought a 2002 Mazda B3000 which is a Ranger with different badges and the cruise control wouldn't work. I have read through these threads and reference threads and one of the troubleshooting guides suggested checking that all of the brake lights were working. Well my CHMSL was not working and I replaced the bulb, now cruise works fine. From what I can figure out the cruise control unit monitors current in the brake light circuit to kick out the cruise when you step on the brake. Without all the bulbs working apparently the current is insufficient for the control unit to allow the system to engage. Sure is an easy thing to check and most of us want those behind us to know when we are stopping anyway. Worth a try if your cruise isn't working...start with the simple stuff first.
