I've had this prob for a while and I never fixed it cuz I don't know what I need to do. Whenever the temp outside is fairly hot (85 or up) the speedo is usually off by 4 mi/h. In the winter time, it can be up to 30 mi/h depending on the cold weather. After the truck warms up, the speedo will start to become more accurate. My tach has also been right, so I have run on that for 2 years and it hasn't bothered me. But I've just been wondering what is wrong with it? The instrument panel is a beach to get out, so I really didn't want to try until I knew what was wrong with it. I have taken the cable off the transfer case and tried to pull the cable out so I can lube it, but it won't come out that way. Any answers would be nice. :icon_confused:

Is it the '91 Explorer?

Your speedometer is mechanical.

If it works better when the outside air is warm and is slow when the outside air is cold, then it sounds like any grease/lubricant in the cable is freezing. Don't quite add up to me though because I don't think you can grease them. Could be wrong though.

Here's the transfer case end:

Here would be your dash end:
