hi all,

my ranger starter is making a bunch of noise when it starts the truck (high pitch grinding noise).
it's a 87' 2wd, 2.9 with the 5-speed.
Are there shims for the starters or what? It's loud enough that people across a parking lot will turn and stare.
thanks.

Mike

When I did my engine swap, I had a similar issue, got under it and realized I didn't tighten the bolts and they had backed out. If it's tight but not engaging properly, sounds like new starter time, I doubt shimming would help...

Well I checked the bolts and they are tight. Do they make shims for the starter?

I suggest you remove the starter and examine the teeth on the flywheel and starter.

I got a 93 for free because the flywheel teeth were shot and the guy didn't think it was worth paying to have the tranny dropped to replace it.

well, I replaced the starter and here we are a month later and this starter is now grinding and not in engaging.
After I replaced the old starter, it still made some noise but not as bad by any means.
The flywheel was new in Dec. and from what I can see the teeth still look fine.
Does the starter on the 2.9 require shims?
HELP!

No, you dont need shims.

The only ones ive ever seen that needed shims were some Small block chevys.

Dustin
