I have an 02 getting painted right now and do not want to put the mud flaps back on. Is there some kind of plate or cover that would be used to cover the area vacated at the mounting area where the mud flaps used to be? It is either cover these with a pre-existing part or fill in the holes from the plastic retainer plugs and have nothing there at all. Any wisdom out there is appreciated.

Well, I can tell ya my 94 Splash didn't come with mud flaps nor has provision for em. Since your is a stepside see if you can find someone with a 2WD Splash instead of a regular Ranger stepside or a 4x4 stepside. You'll be able to look at both and compare differences. I have a notebook I made back in 99 when I worked at a Ford dealership that has every exploded diagram of my truck and it doesn't show a difference.
