Guys,

I bought the proper oil filter socket (74/76mm, 15 flute filter socket) but the damn thing slips and didn't work.

Can someone suggest a specific manufacturer socket that is proven to fit properly?

Thanks,

CMOS

If you have velcro strips put 2" strip inside the socket
When you push it on the oil filter it will force the other side flutes to grip better and also reduce slipping

I've been using an old school band wrench that has a flex hinge in the handle or a socket if I have a K&N oil filter installed. Either has worked well enough for me not to bother with an cup style tool.

I have had a metal band style with side 3/8" extension hole for 30+ years

Got a similar one with nylon strap about 5 years ago, works great but..........
You have to hold the strap up on the filter until its tight, lol, not a big deal, but two hand job :)

I've only had one vehicle the strap style tool worked well on. There isn't enough clearance for the band tool to get over the filter and getting any cup style tool isn't even a consideration. It isn't my preferred tool but when you need it, you need it and like you said, you have to pull on the strap until the handle engages.

I used the old screwdriver through it trick once. And it ripped the filter apart and it was still tighter than my dads wallet. In the end, it was a total pain in the arse and I'll never do that again.

This is similar to the metal band unit I have had forever: https://cal-vantools.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/891_892_893-600x600.jpg

This is what the nylon strap unit looks like: https://www.princessauto.com/en/6-in-heavy-duty-strap-oil-filter-wrench/product/PA0009078296
Got it for $1 with some other tools at a garage sale

Never had a issue with clearance for either, just lucky I guess :)

That Nylon strap style is one of the types I have. That's what I had to resort to in order to get the last filter off. I think I may have over tightened the last filter change.

Maybe I will stick to this strap style in the future?

MetalBandWithInsideVelcroStrip+RatchetExtension, as RonD suggested above,
is the old reliable tool I've had in my ToolBox for years.
Though now exclusively use K&N OilFIlters with the EasyOff 1"HexHead,
after getting stranded due to a stubborn+broken filter on my wifes car;
finally used a Chisel & TinSnips to slowly\carefully get that one off.
Believe that filter was originally installed overtight at a quick lube shop.

I’m pretty sure we’ve all done that once. It may have been that at one time it really worked but the meta used to make them then may have been thicker too. I’ve yet to see it work for anyone who posted about it in a good number of years and yet people still keep trying to make it work.

I've done it a couple of times in a pinch. But it's a messy disaster and I'd never voluntarily go down that road again given any alternative.

My credo
What's the worst that could happen?
Lesson to be learned: Hand tighten...1/4 turn.
Like everyone else here, I have two sizes of the band style along with the nylon strap type...and of course about 50 different size screwdrivers :p

I have the 3 finger type that self tightens, been working great for at least 15 years.
for tightening it's 1 full turn after the gasket makes contact. I mark the filters for exact rotation.

for the 3.0 I use a metal band style. used a punch to put a bunch of inward facing dimples on it that grab the filter.
