I am pretty sure the 97 4.0l has the 5R55E 5 speed electronic auto bolted to the 4.0l. I think that was the auto choice for the 4.0 and no 4 speed was a choice in 97.

Yes, most likely a 5R55E, but to answer the question, NO.

1994 Ranger will have A4LD automatic, your 1997 computer couldn't control it

Well it could be made to work with the addition of a TV cable, some vacuum lines, etc. And as long as you are ok with a check engine light or OD off light, and only 3 gears with no TC lockup.

The first three gears of the A4LD weren't achieve electronically, so they would still work.

could just swap a manual ecu from the junkyard to elimate those....

http://www.palaceofkibble.com/A4LD_Swap_Pics.htm

shows how to setup the torque converter lockup so its automatic, and you can swap in a earlier a4ld valve body(or maybe wire a switch) to get the 4th gear(or overdrive gear) .

if you wire a switch to the torque converter you and you forget to unlock it when coming to a stop it will stall the engine...

also i cant remember is there a length difference between the 2? if so you might have to modify the driveshafts(i honestly cant remember)

I believe all the Bordeaux transmissions, so A4LD, 4R and 5R series are all the same length.
