Hey guys, I'm in the middle of changing fluid in my new/used transfer case, I got the sTp Dex/Merc atf, is this what this thing takes? It's out of the truck and I want to make sure I put the right crap in it before I put it all back together and drive it. I'm almost ready to put it back and I have to get this truck back together by tomorrow mornings. I think I have the right stuff but I don't have the owners manual or repair book with me. Thanks a lot...

Also, how much does it take? I can't go by letting it run out of the fill plug since it's out of the truck. Sorry, it's sitting on my bench and I don't have a pump available at the moment to fill it up after it's mounted back in the truck..

I'd probably use Merc V, but dex/merc will be ok for an 88.

Don't know how much it takes. Just put a bunch in and once it is installed remove the fill plug and let some run out.

Damn, I have to apologize. My truck is a 1998, I just noticed I have it listed as an 1988. I'm sorry about the mistake, I'm trying to figure out how to change that right now..

Use Merc v for a manual t-case, use T-case fluid for an e-shift in 98.

When that transfer case was built Merc V was the spec. About 10 years ago they put out a different fluid called transfer case fluid. It is Merc V with a friction modifier in it to ease engagement on the electric shift units. For anything built before that stuff was put out the t-case fluid is recommended but Merc V is acceptable. What you have is neither of those things and I wouldn't use it. Go back to the store tomorrow and get Merc V.

Thanks for the info. I have a couple quarts of mercon V left from when I flushed the power steering system, can I use that in my transfer case? If I remember right it should only take about 1.5 quarts or left so I got plenty. I just need to get this thing done tonight.. thanks for your patience..

I just changed mine too!

I have a 2005 and the Haynes manual said nothat Mercon v but to use Mecon since they don't make straight Mercon dex/merc. I thought a 98 would be the same

Sonic, I would trust ADSM over Haynes :) (note the "Ford Tech" banner under his username.

Well, I've been driving the truck in 4wd when I can after doing the transfer case, I put the mercon V in it that night like you guys suggested. The oil I drained out of it looked more like cappuccino than transmission fluid lol. So far so good, it seems to disengage fine now. I'm thinking about opening the old one and rebuilding it so I can have one to use if the new/old fails. Any suggestions on what rebuild kit to get? Thanks everyone for the help...
