I've searched the forum for various takes on transmission "noise(s)" and couldn't find anything related to my situation. Your help would be much appreciated since, living in Nicaragua, resources (garages, mechanics, parts) for fixing my vehicle are very limited.
I have a 98 Ford Ranger XLT (4WD, 4 liter engine, automatic trans) with 156,000 kilometers. There seems to be a problem with the transmission which first popped up a few days ago. When shifting into reverse, with my foot on the brakes and not moving, the transmission makes a very noticeable moaning/groaning noise (sort of like "uuruuurrk"; like a heavy door opening on old hinges), and may take a few seconds to engage. After the vehicle has been running for a while and I have to shift into reverse to park (or to turn around), the noise can be quite loud for considerably longer (5-15 seconds) and the shift into reverse quite abrupt. I think I've also heard the same noise occasionally (but only momentarily and much quieter) when up or down shifting running in forward. The transmission fluid level is correct and is sort of a clear, brownish-red color (but not the clear red of new fluid).
I live in Nicaragua 3 hours away from the only transmission specialist in the whole country. I have a call in to him but since we live in a remote area with no phone service it'll be a few days before I get somewhere to pick up messages or can connect with him. In the meantime, I'd greatly appreciate hearing from forum members what is, or may be, the problem, just to be in a better informed comfort zone when talking with him about what it's going take to get this problem fixed. Thanks in advance for your help and comments.
