If you extended the truck bed by three feet, you would STILL have 4-5 feet beyond the support. 6 or 7 ft bed, 3 ft extender still leaves 4-5 ft extra. You would need to have some tight tie downs in the front of the bed.

My dad has something similar for his 94 Ext cab, but you can take in apart and switch the tubes (one is long, one short) and it's about level with his roof. He put a bar across the top and together with the rack on the roof, he carries 2 kayaks sometimes. You could use that to carry even longer lumber I'd imagine. Not sure where he got it though.... REI maybe?
