Under the Hood of a 86

Been helping my brother get his very nice 1986 short box 2wd 4cyl 5 speed ranger running.
Looks like a 2.0L with the stock carb was giving use crap,so I talked him into a 1978 Pinto carb and intake setup.
while we're at it I was pulling the extra BS vacuum lines and goofy electronic emission stuff off that hasn't be working for years.
I was chasing the White wire with a black stripe for the choke on the little Holley/Webber carb and it went to the passenger side of the engine compartment to this thing.
What the heck is it!

I think that's the relay for the automatic (electric choke) I believe what it does is heat up the element in the choke system to open the choke plate at a certain engine temperature.

It would "turn on & off" the heating element to keep it from staying on too long which would ruin the element

Looking good under the hood...

Is that what that thing is/was? I was reaching around behind my breather one day and my fingers touched something really hot...so I disconnected it (the choke) and switched to a manual version...

Those vac lines were a major PITA for me and I ended up doing the right thing...I think I said a silent thank you at the time as I tossed them all in a big garbage can...considered desecrating them with some bodily filtered beer at the time but may have just let them go their way to landfill heaven...never been so relieved in my life...well, ah, maybe another thread...lol

Yah, my 88 Grand Wagoneer had 40' of vacuum hose and all sorts of widgets to help get the 2150 2 barrel past emissions. Give me EFI any day

Ok! Finally found the book.. It's a choke relay. Like WildBill and DoorGunner explained.

Looks like I will trim the wire and go direct to the choke like the cars from the 70's . Stator to choke. (Unless someone tells my why I shouldn't ...I will listen)

This thing runs so much better already.

Before you even turn on the key on a cold morning---take a look in the carb to make sure the choke is closed properly and put the cover back on the air cleaner....once the engine reaches operating temperature after several minutes (according to the temp gauge).....remove the air cleaner cover & make sure the choke plate is opened all the way so you'll get good gas mileage....adjust the linkage if necessary WHEN THE ENGINE IS COMPLETELY WARMED UP so the plate is opened completely
