My 2008 Ranger is approaching 193,000 miles and I bought my Ranger new back in 2008 and it still has the original water pump on the engine and was wondering if the water pump on the duratec engines actually last that long or have I been extremely lucky that the water pump has lasted this long so far?

I changed mine for the first time at 280k when I changed the timing belt. I wouldn't recommend going that long. The most common water pump failure is a seal failure. You'd see coolant leaking from the weep hole on the pump or notice loss of coolant in the reservoir. In summary, it wouldn't be a bad idea to change it. It would be a good time to change the serpentine belt, tensioner, and idler while you're at it if they haven't been changed in the last 100k.

They're water pumps. You can take 10 2008 Rangers and they will all go out at different mileage. Mine lasted 93,000 miles. I had a girlfriend who had an Escape that used the same water pump. That water pump lasted as long as the warranty (50,000 miles, I think). It was the easiest water pump I've ever replaced. Loosen the pulley bolts before you remove the serpentine belt then remove three bolts that hold the water pump in place. I've read a few posts where people had a difficult time getting the pump out due to corrosion. Mine just fell out as I removed the last bolt.

the one in my 2005 was still working when I pulled the engine last spring at 367,500 miles.
it wasn't leaking but was stubbornly held in by corrosion. I'm in the salt/rust belt.

I thought a duratech 2.3 was a timing chain?
At any rate its probably at the end of its service life, Im not familiar with the duratech to know how hard a r&r of a water pump is, most rwd engines arent that hard to do. Id get a pump on order along with whatever else is needed, then when you notice its on the way out youre ready.

timing chain for the cams and oil pump, accessory belt drives the water pump. very easy to remove if not corroded on

yes, the oil pump is chain driven.

@racsan , damn your area had some nasty rain yesterday. about 7:10 pm there appeared to be a descending wall cloud just south of Marion.

Yes, was quite rainy. Last weekend streets were flooded in town. My home though wasnt as bad as it was in the spring. We had a flash flood in the side yard, these two pictures were taken a hour apart. Didnt get much higher than the 2nd picture.
