Finished up the tarp tent around my 99 4x4 ranger today. Just in time ! The sleet started falling as I got it finished. Now the dirty talking begins till she finally rolls over for me. Hehe..will be a little bit slow. But nothing stops this old Devil Dog

Looks like he's already done some research, the LS platform is pretty bulletproof and 6L is one of the toughest of them, in the years he's looking they don't have cylinder deactivation I don't believe which is the main mechanical issue other than the oil pump O rings letting them lose oil pressure... a 2500 should have a 4L80 trans I believe (not the 4L60 or 4L65 like a suburban or tahoe) which is a good trans, not quite an Allison but it holds it's own, is a bit parasitic so the mileage suffers... you'll get some electrical and interior gremlins being that era GM but not too bad...

Way better than a 6L powerstroke... I know there's some good 6L powerstrokes but the percentage of good 6L LS engines is MUCH higher...
You are correct. I've done a lot of research about towing and the Chevy/GMC trucks I'm looking at meet my needs. Everything you mention I am aware of. The Fords stop around 8600lbs in towing unless I step up to a 3500 which those get expensive quick. I know they will tow 9000lbs but I may get pulled over by DOT while crossing state lines, and I don't want to go through that mess of being over loaded.

Drove the '90 to work today, pretty miserable with the state of the alignment and whatever is going on in the front axle, about 45mph it starts vibrating something fierce, pretty sure passenger side and most likely spindle bearing or maybe U joint. Hubs unlocked it is smooth but the toe out (I know it's the upper balljoint adjuster on the passenger side) makes it floaty and jerky which is less than fun on ice...

It did fine other than that, need to clean the IAC as it has a tendency to stall out randomly on decel which is new in the last few months...

My son's truck broke down over the weekend. As we were going to get parts yesterday, I heard a pop under the truck and the CEL came on. The truck was running fine so I decided I'd check it out back at home. We came out of the parts house and I immediately noticed wires hanging down on the ground under my truck. I crawled under the truck and had a look. The plastic cable clamp that holds the rear O2 sensor wiring off the driveshaft failed. The wiring harness wrapped up in the driveshaft and ripped everything out of the rear O2 sensor. Thankfully it didn't rip the wiring out of the truck side harness. I ordered a new rear O2 and it'll be here tomorrow.

Good times. It’s never convenient
No but after every good failure is a chance to be more prepared next time. You won’t catch me on a wheeling trip without a cordless grinder and charged battery lol.

My O2 sensor, for the one that was ripped out, came in yesterday. I spent 10 minutes installing it and wire tying everything up so it doesn't happen again. I'm still curious as to what caused the OE plastic cable clamp to fail. It was in good shape a few months back when I replaced the O2s as a matched set. I can only assume old age. I don't go off road in this truck, unless you count maintained dirt roads and driveways as off road. I do not. We shall see what kind of nonsense this day has in store for us.

Those sensors and harnesses are just so close to the heat of the exhaust I think the constant heat cycles probably made it brittle and it gave up.

I went to leave work today and it wouldn't start. Opened the hood and found both battery terminals loose. Replaced them and still wouldn't start. Took the battery out to bring home and put on charge (where it's at now) and noticed a slight bulge on the sides and no slosh of the acid. Pretty sure it was frozen. I could hear it slosh by the time we got home.

Four hours+ to get the old shackles out but only 15 minutes to install the new 2" dropped versions that should give me that one degree of pinion angle we're looking for. Old shackles were seized solid top and bottom so I suspect that was not helping the suspension work properly. All that's left now is to re-adjust the CalTracs.

Picked up the 94 on Friday with a fresh head gasket set and new electric fan setup. On Saturday no heat🥶🥶🥶. Checked the heater hoses one is hot and one is cold. Hoping it's just some debris clogging the heater hoses after the coolant flush. Won't find out til tomorrow🤞

The Strangler strikes again. I noticed a little wetness around the driveshaft seal when I installed the new O2. It wasn't bad so I put it on the list for spring maintenance. Welp, on my way home from dinner tonight, I got on it a little bit to change lanes and the transmission slipped. So gotta replace that seal and top off the fluid, ASPA.
