I'm looking to get a new family car, found a 2001 6cyl 4x4 escape for $5000. Bit high on miles but looks great. Are they any good? I like the looks and mpg alot better that explorer but I don't know squat about them.

I have an '06 with the 2.3 liter Duratec with a 2WD. It's a great little unit, and unbelievably good in the snow for a 2WD (although it is front wheel drive). My brother has an '05 with the 3.0 V6 (Duratec?) and it's AWD, and he loves it. I don't think you'll find many people who have one that will tell you they don't love it.

EDIT: Just to give a little history - I've owned it for 3 years this coming April. I've put a battery in it, front brakes, and a drivers side CV Joint. The CV Joint was only replaced because the boot somehow became torn. It was also a pretty easy part to change. It looked a lot harrier of a job than it was.

thats one of the first years for them, watch out for the transmission, they were not the best. But other than that they are a good car.

It came with the CD4E if it's an auto. Those were around several years before the Escape was around. Oh and '01 is the first year of the Escape.

We just bought a 2010 AWD and love it... with all the snow we just got we cleaned the windshield and drove out the driveway and no problems. We also get 26 mpg out of the little 4 cyl. The one thing I noticed is it shifts hard and quite often, just touch the gas and it downshifts. Oh well just my .02

The Escape is a good vehicle. They are a pain to work on if you buy a V-6 though. For example, to do the rear spark plugs, you have to remove the intake.

Did you also remember to clear off all the other windows, mirrors and lights :) You're not one of those igloo drivers are you?

Not familiar with Escape resale but is $5000 high for a high mileage 10 year old Escape?

I'd look for a 4-banger myself. I love the V-6, but the 4-cyl isn't exactly a dog and it gets 2 or 3 MPG better. Plus they are much much easier to work on.

I have no experience with an Escape but I have an `04 Taurus (109,000) and an `06 Milan(108,000) with the 3.0 Duratec and have not had an issue with either one.
