So while I was under the hood just cleaning a little I see this piece and it looks broken. Does anyone know what this is or what it is called? Heck, maybe even what it does? :)

Thanks!

That is the charcoal canister. Those white areas are supposed to be covered. I think those are vent caps anyway so it is probably still functioning.

That would be the charcoal canister for the evap system. Looks like the top is trimmed down and the caps are missing. May or may not still be working correctly. Top looks a little oil soaked, if you got oil down in it, it may not work right anymore.

Thanks for the replies. So, let me ask this. If it were not functioning correctly what types of effects would it have on the engine?

Probably issues with putting gas in the truck or possible vapor lock issues. But everything will probably work fine unless you get tested for emissions

If they are not working, the fuel vapor collected will eventually be vented to atmosphere. The local squirrels liked my cap so much, they ate it. I used a cap from a WD-40 container to cover the opening, with a screw from the side to hold it in place. So far, they haven't come back for a second course.
Inside the box is a chunk of charcoal. It will absorb some amount of fuel vapor, and when the valve opens, vent the vapor to the intake manifold. There is a valve somewhere connected to the canister and to the intake manifold, that the computer opens and closes. The two openings are vents of some sort. I do not claim to know exactly what they vent...

Good to know. My 93 looks just like that without the oil, been like that for years.
