What years are the best explorer axle w/disc to look for? Are the tags the same for ranger? 31 spline/4:10 gears/L/S would be great, but what models? I see that some came with tornsion(?) carriers. Do the axle gears from a 31 spline carrier fit the 28 spline carrier, would the gears interchange so you can you use it with the exploader axle? I know that these are alot of questions but I'm still learning. /.

If you want a 4.10-geared Ex axle, look for '97-'01 Explorers.

The side/spider gears cannot be swapped between a 28 and 31 spline diff, but you can swap the ring & pinion gears.

The Torsen diff is a Ranger FX4-only option, it was never offered on the Explorer.

All '95-'01 Explorer axles (disc brake) are the same outside of the various ratios available (V8 models had an extra bracket on them for a traction bar or something). But if you specifically want a 4.10 ratio, they were not offered for '95 & '96, you have to look for them in '97-'01 trucks. I believe 4.10 came on some SOHC V6s and V8s, but not with the OHV V6.

A breakdown of the I.D. tags can be found here:

Hope that helps

L/S was an option (but is common). Check the tags before you buy it.
