I recently bought a 2001 with 247k miles. The truck runs and drives, it just has a lot of miles. I bought it knowing I would have to do some work eventually, engine and tranny rebuild etc. The question I have is when to rebuild. Drive it till it dies? Fix it up before it dies?

I've heard 4.0 and 3.0 bottom ends are preeeeetyy stout. I wouldn't worry about 'til it's completely obvious it needs to rebuild

When it dies then worry about it, if its running and driving fine now don't mess with it. However, don't wait till it throws internal components out the side of the block, at that point umm well its not gonna work out so well to rebuild HAHA!!

Deengineer until it is how Blue Oval should have sold it!!
When to rebuild

A good question:

1, when it will save you more than it costs.
2, a quart of oil in 3 months is my limit.
3, when performance drops below 15 mpg.
