Hey, trying to get a bit better MPG. im running 33's, and 4.56's now and its killing my MPG. I want to drop to either a 4.10 or 4.30.

Which do you think is best?

Theres a chart in the tech library that shows the RPMS with regard to gearing and tire size. Kinda depends on that. It's pretty sweet if you havent seen it.

My vote would be the 4.10. I don't think there'd be that much of an MPG difference with just the .2 step down

Do they even make 4.30 gears?

I know years ago you could get 4.27's in the full width 8.8s, but I haven't seen those in years.

I have a set of OEM 4.10s. I would be willing to trade for your 4.56s. Are they quiet, no pitting, or scoring, etc?

That chart doesnt account for added rotational mass. im well aware of the tech library here

Sorry but im not looking to trade. I dont want the truck down more then a few hours. Also i refuse to get used gears, when i can buy new for about $170.

Thanks though!:icon_thumby:

with 33's, 4.10 would put me back to a stock gearing. I think that its going to be a bit low with the new tire weight. each tire is 60lbs +rim. ill have to do a bit more math before i make a decision. 4.30 would be nice to keep some power offroad without cooking my trans. .26 rotation can add up pretty quick on a tank of gas. by that drop, i reduce the driveshaft rotation by 169 turns per mile.

4.10= 2669 R/PM = 299 R/Per mile less
4.30= 2799 R/PM = 169 R/Per mile less
4.56= 2968 R/PM

based on 651 rotations per mile. 4.56 gearing now.

Stock was 3.55's and a 27.4" tire with 761 RPM.

3.55= 2701 R/PM = 267 R/PM less from my 4.56's

so either are very close. 4.10 is good on the highway, 4.30 is good offroad.

HMMM..

Unless you're changing tire/wheels also the chart should work for you. True it doesn't account for rotational mass but it shouldn't effect you that much. There also is a online chart you can use that lets you input tire size and other additional variables. It's on pirate....somewhere, if I was at home I could post the link.

the chart works fine. im looking for someone who is running 4.10's and 33's to give a little info on if she feels sluggish or it works good. the math adds up to a good ratio, just want to know real world.

I know w/ my 4.56s and 35s driving on the highway sucks. Im running 3k RPMs at around 60-65. I dont want to try driving any faster. But I love the low end grunt they give me.

Brinker, is yours an auto? I have 4.88s and 35s and mine aren't that high... I thought it was around 2800-2900 at one time, but when I actually looked it was like 2600 at around 65mph. But an auto might be sticking in a lower gear? They usually run a little higher in rpms to begin with.

I'm running 4.10s and 35s and I can pull around 16 mpg highway. I with the hybrid trans I still have decent gearing in 1 2 and 3(roughly the same as 4.56s)

Unless you like to break rural speed limits by big margins, I see very little to gain by switching from 4.56 to 4.10 gears, if any at all (and even if there was something significant to be had, you'd very likely never recoup your cost to change the gears in gas savings anyway).

I have 4.10s and 33s on my Ranger and I would call it nothing beyond adequate (I wish i had gone with 4.56s instead). I also have the OHV 4.0L and not the SOHC, which I think the SOHC does better with deeper gears than the OHV too.
