my dad used to tow our ski boat loaded with all our camping stuff with a 70 vw transporter van. we would go three hours to the lake every friday and stay till sunday evening. it was around a three hour drive through virginia and it was a slow drive, ha ha ha. that little 2.0 or 1.8 did great.

i tow a small 5x8 trailer with my little 3.0 five speed. it does fine
As long at they were in the capabilities of the vehicle, no harm no foul. My father learned that lesson the hard way on a long, steep hill when I was little. The brakes got hot, faded, and he could't stop until he hit the concrete abutment on the other side of the T-Intersection at the bottom of the hill. He survived the encounter and had a visit to the Emergency Room and ICU as a result.

That is what it looks like that @superj has in his truck. I've never rode one. I hear they are easier to ride.

yes, recumbent bikes. normal upright bikes make my wrists hurt too much to do more than 15 miles so i switched to recumbent about 10 or 12 years back. so much more comfortable and enjoyable on long rides. i do a few 100 mile rides a year and a bunch of 50 milers. my normal tuesday/thursday rides are 35-40 miles and when the weather finally gets nice, i will be back to doing over 100 m-f.

recumbent is where you lay back instead of leaning forward, or sitting upright as mountain bikes are ridden.

mine is a lightning p38, like this one in the picture, but mine is a pretty deep green with metallic flake in it. mine is about 20 years old though so i don't have disk brakes on it. i can do 40mph with the wind behind me and mid 30s just in a sprint.

Recumbent bikes are better in many ways to conventional bikes if you discount the weight of them or the cost.

I know a person that has them because his back can’t handle a standard bike. They have their place for those who need their specific qualities and benefits.

for normal people, the weight is not an issue because they are not buying the ultra light road bikes. the cost though, if you look for a p38 like mine, is prohibitive. i only buy used recumbents because i wanted the fastest one i could get and the p38 is the record holder for the race across america. but, a new one with the stuff mine came from the factory with is 6800 bucks now so that sucks.

but the high end road bikes are the same price, or worse. some guys i ride with paid 20k for just their frames. that is crazy to me. 20k is a car. and a bunch fo the guys ride cervelo which start at 4700 for base model daily rides, and theirs are not those base bikes.

so really, if you are a serious rider, the p38 is at the lower end of road bike prices but you get no pain and get to see where you a re going instead of looking down at hte front wheel

A friend of mine was talking about her new recumbent bike and how nice it was to ride. When she said that it had a nice wide seat and I asked if it was wide enough....

I’ve heard of standard style road bikes that have a price tag like that too. The type that buy bikes like those pretty much make a living or wrap their lives around them. To each their own I suppose.

I stopped at $1,000 for my touring bike and $700 for my mountain bike. That was enough.
