Yesterday I went to my friends house to work on my F150. New U-joints, wheel bearings, and brakes in the front end. On my way home I could not get any pressure in the pedal, so I kind of limped it home (was 10 at night, didn't want to screw around), checked the reservoir and it took a whole small bottle of fluid to fill it. This morning pulled the tire off and there was brake fluid on the back of the tire and I could see a little bit dripping off the frame, yep, blew a line.

So today went to the part store and got 2 reman calipers, a bunch of line and fittings, and am going to change the rest of it today. Put a few hundred into the bitch last night and she still ain't happy :icon_rofl:

But bombing through the woods to get to camp yesterday down what is pretty much a 4-wheeler trail reminded me of why I didn't get a nice truck :D Surprised I didn't get my first real body damage in a couple of places.

At least your doing the work yourself, It would be worse if you had to bend over and take it, only to pay some one else to do the work.

I gave up on paying people to do stuff for me, spent enough money on that crap. I still have the Ranger for backup if I can't finish my F150 in a day.

My old mechanic wanted $180 to replace my u-joints, screw that. I'll spend all day doing something if I have to for that price.

And my friend used to be a mechanic at a dealership, he has just about any tool I'd ever need :D

Nope, you never get ahead. I am sure I have saved myself at least $10,000 in repair labor alone in the last 10 or so years that I have been doing my own repairs. Between me and my buddy that I share a shop with we have just about any tool that I have ever needed.

I was just figuring, on the repairs I've done myself, so far just on my F150 I probably saved $700. The way I figure it, if it is going to cost me more than a days wage to get something done and I can do it in a day, I might as well do it myself.

Very true.

I just can't afford shop labor at any time. I mean, I can, but it seriously cuts into my fun money. About the only work I don't (can't) do is machine work, transmission rebuilds, and gears.

Kinda reminds me of a guy that lives right outside of town. He can fix just about anything, you buy the parts, and him a case of beer, and he'll do 'er for ya, and do it right.......he just likes working on rigs i presume

My credo
Love Thy Neighbor
I recently heard a most annoying scraping sound from the front end of my Zuki...had a look and couldn't see anything...thought the pads looked fine...about two days later, my brake light came on and the front brakes locked up...

Turned out there was ZERO pad left and what I thought was pad was actually the metal on metal...well, one of the pads actually fell out, the caliper pushed the cylinder completely out so that it was actually stopping the vehicle...and then the fluid escaped past the cylinder and, thus, the brake light came on...

Only a couple of hundred, but at least now I have new calipers...and I can actually stop a safe distance from moving objects in front of me...
