ok so I am reading in the tECH lIBRARY REAR DISC BRAKE CONVERSIONS, AND IT SAYS the mustang kit works but not on an 02 4x4 FX4. I would like to know why? is it the shock mount placement? please

the outer axle ends are bigger, which means the backing plate has to be bigger.
assuming 31 spline unit, regular Rangers had only 28 spline axles.

The 02 FX4 should have come from the factory with the 31 spline rear axle. If it still has that, the Mustang rear disc brakes will not fit. In 03+ the FX4 Level II only had the 31 spline axle. After they dropped "Level II" then the 31 spline axle was an option through 2009. After that, they are all 28 spline axles. The Mustang rear brakes only fit the 28 spline axles.

There is a Ford Performance disc brake kit for the Ford 9" axle that does fit the 31 spline axle. I have that on my 09 with the Torsen diff axle. So, if you can find one of those, you can still install disc brakes on your 31 spline axle.

97-200X explorer disks should work. I swapped them on my drum 1993 31 spline explorer rear end- straight bolt in swap.
