The Brown wire on transfer case is for an electric clutch inside the transfer case, it allows "shift on the fly" from 2WD to 4high and then back to 2WD
Clutch is used to engage the chain drive for front drive shaft
This was only used with Auto Hubs and electric shift up thru 2000
It was dropped in 2001 and up Rangers because front hubs were always locked so front drive shaft was always spinning at same RPMs as rear drive shaft, so no issue matching RPMs in transfer case
You can always try a new sensor
