Bought this long block based on secondhand referral from a buddy and saw these reviews after. Assembled accessories and filled with joe Gibbs break in oil prior to priming. Spun the oil pump the wrong way for a minute then corrected myself and it pumped oil fine so I proceeded to turn it over no more than 4 times in increments letting the oil flow through the motor. Pulled dipstick and it looks glittery. Ran a magnet over it and picked up some but not all shiny flakes. Have not started this motor - just filled, primed, and turned over a few times by hand. Is this uncleared buildup from the reman process? Did I introduce metal when spinning the oil pump the wrong way dry? What next?

Run it with a drill and pump the oil through the system. Then you can drain that oil and put new oil in and start it

I don't belive spinning the pump the wrong way affected anything.

There should also be zero glitter in the oil.

If you don't have time to do it right will you have time to do it over?
There shouldn't be anything from the reman process. Did you spin the oil pump backwards by hand or with a drill? If you used a drill I'd take it apart before running it. As a minimum, pull the valve covers and check for glitter. If you find any you may be able to pour clean oil in there to try and flush it all into the pan but there likely would be metal particles in the oil passages, too. Once you change the pump and the oil & filter you could try spinning it to pump oil throughout the engine. Then change the oil & filter again and repeat. If it was mine and I didn't tear the engine down and completely clean it, it would bite me.
I wish you luck.

I should have prefaced this by saying I typically slather the oil pump gears with lubriplate assembly lube. I have no idea what they did.

I hope that is all... but it is kinda scary what else they didn't clean.
Bought a long block so I didn’t geek out and overspend on a motor build; perhaps I should have.
Sounds like a motor pull eh?

Also... Ford springs are kinda mediocre at best when new... probably not the greatest idea in the world to reuse 40+ year old mediocre valve springs.

I'm scared of what may not have been done in that engine. My hopes are it's fine but my first instinct/reaction is to pull the oil pan after a few flushes and to start checking clearances and bearings to be sure the low end was done properly.

The springs looking like that makes me question if the block was cleaned properly before a refresh was done.

Good luck with this one. Let us know what else you find.

Not one to assume but best to assume they didn’t do jack shit and tear this down to ensure I don’t ruin this motor. What are first steps? Pull motor and open the drain plugs then start cleaning and flushing w oil?

I'd leave it in for now and flush using the drill on the oil pump. Also cut open the oil filter and inspect that to see how much metal it has collected during the flushing. This will help give an idea of how much you may find once you start to open the low end.

Also inspect the oil pump to see if any shavings have run through it damaging it.
