Hey all, I'm getting ready to do a swap on my 1999 Ranger using a 2000 Explorer. 90% of the electrical is going to be plug and play with my donor. There appears to be a few things that I need to modify in the stat charge harness. Looks like main one is the connections for the A/C high pressure switch. Anyway, I would like to take a look at the wiring diagrams for both. I have a Chiltons/Hayes manual around somewhere for the '99, but those things cover a range of years and the diagrams often aren't that detailed or precise to model years.

I found a Ford Wiring Diagram manual for the Explorer on evilbay for <$20. I'm striking out on one for 1999 Ranger. Only one I've found so far was a listing on Amazon for closer to $120 $75 and that ain't going to happen.

I'd be happy with a electronic version of the manual, but it's too difficult to know what you're getting with those CD listing. I did buy BISHKO service manual CD one for the Explorer since it was on sale for around $40 shipped, but it has good reviews from what I could find and I'd already found the EVTM. I won't know until I recieve it if it actually contains wiring diagrams, but I figured it would still be good to reference for instructions and torque specs on the 5.0L drivetrain components I'm using.

The Ranger, the CDs for it aren't on sale (not that good of one atleast), and there is no gurantee that it actually contains the wiring diagrams. I don't need the service manuals for the Ranger, and they ain't quite cheap enough to take a gamble on if it has the wiring diagrams. Actually information I find for the Ranger on the BISHKO website says: "Ford Motor Company did not include wiring diagrams in its shop manuals. These can be purchased separately.

Anyone know where I can find a copy of the 1999 Ranger Wiring Diagram Manual for a reasonable price?

I don't even mind buying a CD version or downloading it if I know it contains what I need.

I did consider a service like alldata, but it's one month plan is single vehicle. It's multi vehicle & month plans are higher than I'm willing to pay for the ammount that I'd use it.

I just looked at the electronic Chiltons at my local library and those diagrams are pretty good. They are free if you get a library card and your local library has the Chiltons online service.

My credo
Toonces drives a Ranger . . . . just not very well.
I wish that could help, but my RPC (Ranger Porn Collection) runs 1983 to 1994. Sorry, man!

Back when I worked for the local library system(around 2003) they had access to all that stuff. Last time I tried to use it, been several years, they no longer had it available. I'll check again soon.

Thanks for checking. Keep collecting, someone will need access to it some day.

I found an auction for one on ebay today, starting bid is about $25 with $5 shipping. Although eBay is an auction site, I hate bidding on auctions because someone (likely seller) is almost always going to be a jerk and start a bidding war to drive the price up. For that reason I wait until the last minute to bid and auction doesn't end until tomorrow. I'm going to bid on it if I don't miss the end of the auction. If I miss it the search is still on.

"Sniping" is the only way to do online auctions.

Back when I was building my RPC, I found out that checking eBay at least daily (or more often) works well. Typically the manual that you're looking for has listings, but they're long-term repeat listings or BIN (buy-it-now) and the sellers are wanting varying degrees of an arm and leg for them.

But on the other hand the same manuals are listed often for dirt cheap, and those listings don't last long. A BIN you just snap it up. On auctions, if somebody else is wanting the same manual, bidding early makes it more expensive at best, and some people will get caught up in a bidding war, too. Figure out what you're willing to pay, and then snipe it in the last seconds. Most times, you'll get it; great fun!

The toughest one that I needed ('94 Powertrain and Emissions) took a couple of months to get reasonably, but most all of the others were cheap and quick.

AC pressure switches on 1999 Ranger are the ground for the AC clutch relay, but via the PCM

ground------switch--------switch-----------PCM--------------AC Clutch relay

PCM gets a 12volt AC on signal from climate control(AC Demand), it has an internal relay that closes and connect pressure switch ground to AC Clutch relay

Worst case, you can install your own 12v relay activated by 12v AC from climate control

@RonD I figured that was how the switches worked, but didn;t really know how it was tied back into the PCM.

Thanks for the diagram. It helps, unfortunately it doesn't seem to contain quite all the routing details that I was hoping to find. With any luck I'll have a manual for the truck purchased in the next few days.

According to that diagram, based on wire colors it looks like the AC switch I'm talking about is the "A/C Pressure Cutoff Switch" in the bottom right corner of the page. Both the Ranger and Explorer have this switch they are just in different locations. Same line, but on the Ranger the switch is at the back of the compressor and on the Explorer it's by the radiator. Definitely want to keep it in place and it should be as simple as extending the wires to the new location when I get the starting harness modifications figured out.

EDIT: Got my threads mixed up, rest of this post belonged elsewhere.

I know, I did it manually a bunch back in the "early days" of eBay. Then people got too interested in troll bidding. Got to be too much trouble to keep up with auction ending times. Then I started skipping auctions for BIN sales and Amazon.

I remembered and got logged back into a sniping platform I used to use, successfully most of the time. Set a snipe for this auction so I won't have to remember it or be available when the time comes.

If all goes well I'll have both wiring diagram manuals next week.

I bought CDs on Ebay that were original Ford Shop Manuals, the ones they used in the Ford Houses. I got one for the 93 and the 96, they each also the entire lines for those years, every nut bolt and wire on them
The 93 was like 6 or 8 dollars, the 96-99 I got years later for 10 or less, the last ones I looked at several years ago were getting up 40 or 50, but actually still a deal I suppose

Those old Ford CD's were very good. Problem is I can't get them to work on the new computers. Someone suggested I split my computer in two, installing the old windows system in part of it and running the old CD's on that. Too much hassle for me. I was hoping Microsoft would have some sort of work around if demand for that old software made it worthwhile for them, but apparently they are too busy selling new software.

Have you tried them in an 8-track player?

I have quite a few old programs and old hardware that I work with from time to time and kept a Windows XP system in the shop

Sniping site worked. Was busy at work when the auction ended, but won the auction. Probably wouldn't have mattered if I had just prebid since I was the only bidder, but it prevented someone beom being a jerk and running the auction up. Winning bid was just under $25, so about $30 delivered.

For starters you computer needs to have an optical drive. I won;t own a desktop without, but don't come with them any more and I haven't seen a new laptop with one built in for a long time.

If you have that check into using Windows compatability mode to run them, I've had success with it in the past. If that didn't work I'd install a virtual machine with the correct operating system. I've got a few things I'll be doing that for if I try to use them again. In particular a SCT Xcal2 tuner. I doubt its is supported by current SCT software, but I have the old software saved somewhere. I don't think it will work on current OS, but I can easily run XP or Vista in a virtual machine. Probably wasted effort, that device is old enough that tuners probably won't work with it any more.

I think windows 10/11 still has Compatibility Mode, and you can use that to run or view older programs
