So i am almost finished with my 4.0 swap from the rugged old ticking 2.9. I got the engine in the engine bay and everything else. Routed the harness, made some splices went to fire her up and she just cranks over and over. I have both fuel pumps turning on with the key in the on position, fuel pressure at the rail, 12.67v at the injectors for key on, i have good spark, air is hooked up and everything. I can start it with starting fluid for a little while, but past that, it wont stay running. Im very lost as to what the problem is, i do not know where to begin searching from here. please help!

just do it!
correct if I do not understand:
1. you have a fire at the spark,
2. both gasoline pump rayuotayut.
3. starter turns
4. you start the engine and it works, then stalls.
am I right?
if yes, how many relays you hooked?
you need 3 relays, they are all connected the red wire.
ps
when you turn key to "on" (before starts)have you hear voice of fuel pump?
if you hear it, whats presure of fuel in the rail?

What year 4.0l?

Yes, if possible check fuel pressure, or at least press down on center pin of schrader valve to see if fuel sprays out, be careful, should be 35psi in the rail, same as tire pressure.

'98 and up 4.0ls needed 65psi of pressure.

Could be the Fuel Pressure regulator(FPR) on the rail is stuck open, so not allowing pressure to build up.

Computer grounds the fuel injectors to open them, so make sure all ground wires around the computer are hooked up and clean, I think there are 4 or 5 ground wires the computer uses for different systems, they are not "common" in the computer.

The engine Runs until the starting fluid is burned off, then it dies. My friend who helped me reassemble the engine back together after I rebuilt it might have put the fuel line fittings on the wrong way, therefore supplying fuel to the return and return to the supply. Which would be why I don't have fuel pressure at the rail. The engine is from a 1992 Ford Ranger Manual transmission.

you have not pressure in rail?
first: see to the fpr
second: see to the fuel line.
third: move out line from fuel pump( between fuel pump and rail) and turn key to on position. if you see fuel - you must see to fpr or connection of fuel lines.

I got it running. The fuel lines were on backwards and trying to feed the fuel into the return side and vice versa
