Will a locked up transmission prevent crankshaft from turning?

2.9l with and A4LD, crank will not turn. The transmission ran in gear about 20 feet while the tranny oil was drained. I assume its shot, however now I am unsure how to remove it. The crank will not turn with the plugs pulled.

Is there a way to verify the motor is still ok? Also, any direction to information on removing a seized one would be much appreciated

You can pull any automatic off with torque converter still bolted to flex plate
Torque converter is not physically attached to transmission, just bolted to crank via flex plate

Just remove all 6 bell housing bolts and trans can be pulled out

Shift trans out of PARK if you haven't already, and see if engine turns, and roll vehicle back and forth and see if engine turns
You may have fried the input shaft bearing and/or torque converter(it needs ATF as well)

Did the 2.9 propel it the 20 feet, or was it towed 20 feet?

If the 2.9 did the motovation, you shut it off, and now it wont restart chances are its the trans binding something up. Motors will make all sorts of bad noises before locking up.

Did you try turning the crank with a ratchet? It might be a bad electrical connection.

If the tbing was towed and you havent heard it run....do what ron said :)

Athough i doubt 20 feet at im assuming low speed would fry even an A4LD

Did you try starting it in neutral?

The 2.9l did move the truck while the trans was drained, also put into reverse during the move. I have not been able to get the crank to turn. The engine originally ran fine but has sat for a few years, hard to believe it would lock up.

I guess my only option is to remove the trans at the bellhousing leaving the converter as stated above. Would I be able to slide a new trans back in without pulling the motor? That is provided its not shot and the damaged trans is what was preventing me from turning the crank. Thanks.

So it sat for a while, ran, then wouldnt crank?

Or it ran, sat for years, now wont crank?

Yes the trans can be changed without pulling the engine.

Thats actually a good point.

unless he drained just the pan and there was a shitton in the converter.
