That is why it takes me forever to get a project done. Tons of research and I take my time at it.

I own a motorcycle so I can drive it, in hopes it doesnt rain. I live 2 miles from work so not a long trip either. Rain will also be motivation to get the swap done faster. I will also have all my ducks lined so when I do go do the swap, I will be able to do it quickly. I also will hopefully getting a blazer soon too for free. Runs great, just needs body work, has cancer on it.

Now trying to decide on the next modification. I've been thinking of making a gas tank skid out of aluminum diamond plate. It would be light weight since it has the ranger lean already. Or should I make it out of steal with thinner material. Would be easier to fabricate that way.

Which would you have protect you fuel tank...steel or aluminum?

Personally steel for me due to I can weld it, never done aluminum, and would be cheaper in the end. Now if you can find diamond plate cheaper, then do that i guess.

How bad is your ranger lean? Add whtever weight you think that the gurad will weight, aluminum or steel, and go from there.

It was bad enough I had to put a 1" spacer on the front springs to make it level. I might just go a thin gauge steel and just weld it together. Aluminum I would have to bolt it all together.

Bundy Hill opens for the season on March 16th. Planning on a making a trip on the 17th. Hopefully we won't have a blizzard that day since we really haven't had a winter yet.

Trying to decide if I should leave the 28 spline in or get a 31 spline 8.8? Want to get a lockrite or a Spartan locker. They are cheaper for the 31 but with the cost of another axle it will be about the same price as just buying the locker for the 28.

My reasoning on asking is the 28 I have has all new bearings, seals etc... If I get a 31 from the jy it might need all new everything. So $100 to pull the axle, $100 to rebuild it. So there is $200 for a 31 expo axle. Then take the time to swap gears.
A lockrite for a 31 is about $300 and I can get one for the 28 for $370 to $450. So is the difference that much better to justify a swap? I already know how much stronger the 31 is over the 28. Keep in mind this is a DD not a hardcore wheeler.

the exact reason you should upgrade to the 31....

since it is your DD and you do take it off-road....it is almost a wash $$ wise....

the difference between the 28 locker and the 31 almost pays for the axle itself.....granted the seals, bearings, etc. will be the only real cost over the rest....

and granted there is a little $$ difference, but if ya break the axle playing and need the truck on Monday to get to work/whatever......I think it would be money well spent for really cheap insurance...
