The next culprits would be intake or valve covers.

Auto or manual?

Sometimes front seal leaks on an auto can be mistaken for rear main on the motor.

Other then that it could be the oil pan. VC gaskets generally leak all over the exhaust and cause a smokey condition and a stench

Distributor has an O-ring on it that is a common leak spot on 2.9s as well.

Toonces drives a Ranger . . . . just not very well.
Another place that can leak oil that can end up under the rear mail is the o-rings in the oil filter adapter.

I also replaced the valve cover gaskets. Between the engine and transmission there is cover with two bolts holding it in place and You can remove one bolt and you can move it over and you see the fly wheel. Their where I can see the oil dripping out.

Don't know about the 2.9L. If a 3.0L, it would be the oil pan gasket.

Down the front of the flywheel(toward engine) or the back(toward trans)?
